I've been thinking recently about the parables - Jesus Christ was clearly the greatest teacher ever to walk the face of the earth. His powerful stories are still engrained in society almost 2000 years after He first taught them - The Good Samaritan, The Prodigal Son, The Wise & Foolish Builders.
I find the parable of The Great Banquet in Luke 14 intriguing. What does Jesus home in on as the 3 most common reasons given to refuse God's invitation to His heavenly banquet (Isaiah 25:6-8)?
1 - Luke 14:18, property interests.
Then, as now, an investment in property was the largest financial outgoing anyone was likely to make in their lives.
2 - Luke 14:19, job.
Then, as now, working to put food on the table absorbed more time than any other activity over the course of a lifetime (with the exception of sleeping).
3 - Luke 14:20, spouse.
Then, as now, the wedding day was the most important in anyone's life and the most significant emotional attachment was to the spouse.
Remarkable that Jesus put His finger on these 3 things; quite possibly still the 3 most common reasons given to ignore God's invitation.
